The capital of the Alps

Courmayeur

Already inhabited in Roman times, the place-name Courmayeur derives from the Latin Curia Maior, or seat of the parish

“Conca in vivo smeraldo fra foschi paesaggi dischiusa, o pia Courmayeur ti saluto”, Giosuè Carducci, Odi barbare 1889

Courmayeur is a treasure chest that contains fairy-tale alpine landscapes dominated by the magnificence of Mont Blanc, which monitors, with its beauty, the entire valley. The town began its tourist development in the seventeenth century, thanks to the utilization of its sulphurous waters through the construction of a spa.

Its great fame came in the following hundred years, when Courmayeur became the starting point for the explorations of the rocky meanders of Mont Blanc.

In 1850 the first company of Italian mountain guides was born here. Recent history is linked to the development of ski lifts for alpine skiing in the winter, to trail races during the summer months and to the fame of a glamorous resort.

Its very busy main street (via Roma) is a succession of designer boutiques, cafes and shops of delicacies.
